The best things to do in Somerset for families

My guests at The Manor Holcombe often ask me for advice about the best things to do in Somerset for families. Each group is looking for something different. They may prefer to do sporty challenges, visit historic sites or experience something more unique.

Whether it is for adults, teenagers, tweens, toddlers or a good mix, there is something appealing for everyone within easy reach of The Manor Holcombe.

I have lots of enjoyable activities to suggest so I thought it would be worth writing up the best for a taster of what to expect.

Here are a few of my personal recommendations for things to do in Somerset for family days out with kids and teenagers or just fun days out with friends:

Playgrounds, zip wires and skatepark

The Holcombe playground and zip wire in the village has to be the closest activity for kids! It is on the village green opposite the entrance to The Manor Holcombe and it includes a zip-wire. It may not be that sophisticated but young children love it and it’s an easy change of scene.

If you are keen to visit the sites in Bath, be sure to combine it with a trip to the Royal Victoria Park for a day out you will all adore.

Within strolling distance of the centre of Bath, the Royal Victoria Park is a vast expanse of parkland with towering mature trees, a botanical garden, play park and cafes. You can even play a game of tennis or a round of mini golf on the 18-hole course.

Take your skateboards too because the impressive concrete skate park there is known as one of the best in the UK, with a vert bowl, shallow bowl, street, plaza and freestyle sections.

Go on Safari

A day out at Longleat is always a hit and it is just 30 minutes drive from The Manor Holcombe. Longleat is a beautiful Elizabethan country house set in 1,000 acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown. There is so much to see and do at Longleat. The central attraction is the safari park which is home to over 500 animals, including giraffe, monkeys, rhino, lion, tigers, cheetahs and wolves.

I would advise booking activities there via the website before you go as the most popular slots can book up in advance. Seasonal events such as Christmas lights or outside cinema screenings are definitely worth booking.

Go Horse Riding

Riding in this scenic part of Somerset is a wonderful experience. Just 10 minutes drive from the house is the excellent Divoky Riding School with good instructors, horses and ponies available for lessons.

Go Karting

Apart from admiring their collection of classic cars, Haynes Motor Museum has an amazing outdoor karting track. Set up as a Formula One track with a start/finish gantry, lighting, a digital flag system and pit wall, it is a five start go karting experience to remember. Book your slot on their website.

Visit an open-air market

The colourful markets in nearby Frome are an easy 20 minutes’ drive from The Manor Holcombe and so worth visiting. The Artisan Market takes place on the first Sunday of the month. The Frome Collectors and Flea Market is on every Wednesday, for second hand goods, antiques and collectibles.

If you miss the markets, I suggest you go anyway for Frome’s beautiful historic buildings, independent shops and arty vibe. Find out more on the Discover Frome website.

See the sights in Bath

For a fascinating journey into the past, head to Bath for a day trip, just 30 minutes’ drive from The Manor Holcombe. Highlights include a stroll down the magnificent Royal Crescent, a tour of the Roman Baths and for Jane Austen fans, a trip to the Jane Austen centre. You will also find plenty of good restaurants and independent shops to explore.

I always suggest that adult groups should head to the rooftop pool of Thermae Spa to soak in Bath’s famous thermal spring waters for a unique experience.

Or let the activities come to you…
